Knowledge Management Strategies in Linguistic Preferences

ABSTRACT

Evaluating knowledge management strategies for a firm is a complex and challenging issue because the measures often involve in a set of qualitative criteria which are in essence linguistic and interdependent. To tackle this kind of issue, this paper proposes a framework which utilizes the fuzzy set theory to elucidate the linguistic information and the analytic network process to address the interdependence of criteria. A case company—the leading medical consumable products in Taiwan is studied to demonstrate the proposed framework. A group of specialists in the case company was formed to determine the goals, criteria, and alternatives for the KM strategies. The results based on the proposed framework reveal that the most important goal for KM strategy is activating performance, the most important criterion is incentives, and the best alternative is human-oriented style. Accordingly, the human-oriented style should be taken on acquiring and sharing tacit knowledge and interpersonal experience. Moreover, incentives should serve as the critical success factor in the KM strategy.
